The North Reading Historical &Antiquarian Society, Inc. began its existence as the North Reading Antiquarian Club about 1953. The purpose of the group continues today: the promotion of interest in articles of antiquity, their preservation and history. The organization has grown to be a group of nearly one hundred men and women of wide ranging interests and talents, interested in many aspects of North Reading's historical past.
In 1961, the group incorporated as the North Reading Historical & Antiquarian Society. Application was made and granted to be a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization for preservation and educational purposes. It is private, non-government organization with membership open to everyone, and it is always actively seeking new members. Membership forms are available at the Flint Memorial Library , at the Town Clerk's Office in Town Hall, and online.
The Historical Society has undertaken the restoration and supervision of several historic structures at no cost to the taxpayers. With a membership of just under one hundred people, and current dues ranging from $10 to $20 family, this group has limited resources for its work. Funds are raised by fairs, such as the Apple Festival, and the sale of merchandise (tee shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, mugs, afghan, and jewelry) and generous donations from members, local businesses, and residents.
For more information call the Society's phone number at (978) 664-1066.
